ZeroGPT vs GPTZero - Which is More Accurate?

ZeroGPT and GPTZero. Similar names. Different tools. One of the most confusing things in the AI detection space. Which one is more accurate?

GPTZero

GPTZero was created by Edward Tian at Princeton. It measures perplexity and burstiness at the sentence level. It is the more established tool and is used by many universities alongside Turnitin.

Accuracy in our test: Correctly identified 8/10 samples. Two false positives on human-written academic text.

ZeroGPT

ZeroGPT is a separate tool (not affiliated with GPTZero despite the similar name). It uses its own detection algorithm and provides a percentage-based AI score.

Accuracy in our test: Correctly identified 6/10 samples. Four false positives, including two on clearly human-written blog posts.

Head-to-Head Results

• Raw ChatGPT text: Both detected it. No surprise there.
• Human-written blog post: GPTZero correctly scored it as human. ZeroGPT flagged it at 45% AI.
• Humanized AI text (via AiTwo): Both scored it as human. GPTZero gave 12% AI. ZeroGPT gave 8%.
• Academic essay (human-written): GPTZero flagged it at 35% AI. ZeroGPT flagged it at 62% AI. Both wrong.
• Casual email (human-written): Both correctly scored as human.

Which is Better?

GPTZero is more accurate overall. It has fewer false positives and is better calibrated for different writing styles. ZeroGPT tends to be more aggressive, flagging text as AI even when it is not.

That said, neither is perfect. Both have false positive problems, especially with formal or structured human writing. If your professor uses either tool, a well-humanized text should pass both.
